“On June 25 in Berlin 7,000 witnesses attended a specially called assembly, unanimously passing a resolution entitled “Declaration of Facts.” It was a strong protest to Hitler and his government against their highhanded interferences with the witness work of the Society.”

The paragraph quoted carries no footnote of its own; the article’s footnote citing “1934 Yearbook, pp. 127-146” (footnote h) is attached two paragraphs later, to the sentence recording that the United States Department of State registered its protest with the Hitler government.

Notes. The same article states that “Some two thousand witnesses lost their lives” and that “some 8,000 witnesses survived” the concentration camps. The organisation’s 1993 chronology gives 2,074 sent to concentration camps and no figure for deaths; the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum gives an estimated 1,000 German and 400 non-German deaths, and at least 3,000 sent to camps.
